For in our society religion and culture are intertwined. Sadly, the old practices that are discriminating against women (which at the time existed in every society – Eastern and Western) have become institutionalized by Qu’ran in the form of Sharia laws. I believe that gender equality is not possible without either religious reformation or a total separation between church and state. It is not possible to address the issue of the status of women in the Arabic society without addressing the issue of the status of women in Islam.
